Postpartum Doula

November 2, 2021

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula provides support after childbirth. She is there to help families in those first days and weeks after bringing home a new baby.

The postpartum period is a time of adjustment for families and a doula can help guide and navigate families through this special, and sometimes, overwhelming period. Caring for a newborn is a challenge and most parents need help dealing with the late night feeding schedules, a crying or fussy baby as well as all of the everyday commitments of life. Unfortunately, newborns don’t come with an instruction manual. This is where a postpartum doula becomes an invaluable resource.

Having in home support can have a positive effect on a woman’s postpartum period. Evidence based research also shows that women with postpartum doula support have “ fewer instances of depression, better success with breastfeeding and more self-confidence”. ( www.dona.org )

I strongly believe that new parents need to be nurtured. The postpartum care that a doula brings empowers and enables parents to care for their newborns.
